Three crews from Basildon and one from Corringham were called to the scene of the Basildon Golf Club, Cray Hill Road, Basildon, at 2.30am to find half of the single storey club-house was well alight and smoke logged.

They used four water jets to extinguish flames, which were out by 4.30am.

Gary Critch, incident commander-station officer from Basildon Fire Station, said: “The fire was in a derelict building at the golf club which was used as the social club/bar.

“Essex County Fire and Rescue Service will be carrying out a joint investigation with Essex Police to establish the cause of the fire.”
