AN IPSWICH headteacher has today described the expected return of students less than two weeks after fire tore through school as a “miracle”.

As Copleston High School Headteacher Laurie Robinson announced revised arrangements for the beginning of term at the fire-ravaged school he praised contractors and staff for getting the school back to normal so quickly.

He said: “It is a miracle we are going to be able to get so many children back much sooner than expected. The school has sustained a huge amount of damage in the fire.

“It was not just the loss of two science labs and two classrooms but the loss of the main corridors which are the main artery of the school.”

Mr Robinson, who has led the school for the last seven years, said Copleston has received massive public support after the fire that swept through the school on August 27. Fifteen fire crews were called to the scene after a suspected arson attack.

Mr Robinson added: “We lost our IFCT network, our telephone system, our power supply and our boilers were damaged. Just days ago, where I am standing now was six inches under water.

“Now the floor is dry, the walls are washed and the smoke has been removed.”

Contractors and school staff are to work throughout the weekend to get the school ready in time for the return of the first students on Wednesday.

Mr Robinson added: “There is a real surge of energy among us all to get the school ready. The progress has been remarkable and it has been a staggering achievement that we will be able to welcome students back so quickly.”

Year 7 students are to return at 8.30am on Wednesday September 6. They are to use the main entrance and go straight into the school hall.
