The body of a man was recovered from the water at Neptune Marina in Ipswich this morning by members of the emergency services.
Fire, ambulance and police crews were sent to the waterfront near Aurora bar just before 11am to reports that a body had been seen floating 20ft out in the marina.
A spokesman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the man was dead.
A water rescue team from Princes Street Fire Station in Ipswich was deployed in an inflatable boat to recover the body by 11.30am.
Although formal identification is still to be carried out, police have been in contact with the man’s family.
A police spokeswoman added that the man had been reported as missing in the early hours of this morning and officers had been making enquiries to attempt to locate him.
At this stage, as is standard procedure, the death is being treated as unexplained, however there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances.
The fire service spokesman added: “Some excellent inter agency liaison and working between SFRC (Suffolk Fire Rescue Service), Police, Ambulance and also Port Authority staff saw the individual rescued and handed over to Ambulance crews. Station Commander Jon Southgate monitored the incident for SFRS.”
Speaking from the scene this morning, Mr Southgate, station commander at Princes Street Fire Station, said: “We were called to reports of a person in the water. We mobilised resources from Princes Street, the swift water rescue team and a support crew and a support crew from Ipswich East, and two flexi-duty officers.
“We are working with police and ambulance crews.
“We were able to get access into the water fairly rapidly.”
He added that a number of pedestrians and people in the area had stopped to watch the rescue.
“We have tried to be discreet and offer that dignity, and police have assisted us with that,” he said.
The East of England Ambulance Service received a call at 10.57am to reports of a body in the water near Patteson Road in Ipswich.
Two ambulance crews, two ambulance officers and the hazardous area response team attended.
