A dead body has been pulled out of the water in the vicinity of the Orwell Bridge.

Thames Coastguard confirmed they had attended but said it was a police matter.

It is understood the body was found in the River Orwell, in the area of the Orwell Yacht Club.

The body was spotted at around 8.45am by a passing yacht and recovered by the Harwich inshore lifeboat.

The RNLI crew took it to the yacht club where they were met by police and coastguard units.

Philip Newman, commodore of Orwell Yacht Club, said: “We came down this morning for our race and there were a number of police officers and ambulance crews who told us about a report of a body at the Cliff Quay.

“Next thing I know they have retrieved the body using our slipway, they brought the unfortunate person on land using the slipway then just went through usual procedures and went away.”

Mr Newman said he arrived at the club at around 10am and the incident was dealt with by 10.30am.

Suffolk Constabulary said they were now in the early stages of trying to identify the body.

The death is being treated as unexplained.
