POLICE have warned people to check the identity of callers, after a man posing as a fireman tried to enter a house in Gainsborough Road, Stowmarket.

The woman occupant did not let the man in, and Suffolk Fire Service later confirmed he was not an employee.

POLICE today warned people to check the identity of callers after bogus workers preyed on two families in separate incidents.

In Little Blakenham yesterday a workman knocked on the door of an elderly couple's property in The Com. He said he was working at a neighbour's house following a burst water main and needed to inspect their house.

The couple allowed the man into their home, but after he had left they noticed that cash and credit cards had been stolen.

Meanwhile, a man posing as a fireman tried to enter a house in Gainsborough Road, Stowmarket.

The woman occupant did not let him in, and Suffolk Fire Service later confirmed he was not an employee. He wore navy trousers and anorak, was 5ft 8in, with fair hair, and in his early 20s.

Anyone with relevant information is asked to call police on 01473 613500.
