GOOD causes benefited to the tune of £600, thanks to fundraising at this summer's Walton Carnival.

Organisers of the event are confident that there will be one next year – but they are still desperate for help to get it up and running.

At the carnival's annual meeting, cheques were presented to representatives of Felixstowe and District Childminding Group, Felixstowe Nursery School, Felixstowe and District Council for Sport and Recreation, and the 7th Felixstowe Scout Group.

It had been hoped that people interested in helping the carnival to survive would have come forward at the meeting at Walton Community Hall.

But treasurer Andy Spraggons said sadly none had done.

"We are still really desperate for a secretary to do our admin work, and we really need some extra people to help organise the carnival," he said.

"The more people we get on board, the easier the workload is for everyone. We will be holding another meeting next month and we hope that people will think about how they can help and contact us to find out more."

The carnival is traditionally held on the second Sunday in June and that date has been provisionally booked for next year. With it being the Queen's Golden Jubilee, the theme is likely to reflect the occasion.

The organising committee is determined not to let it die and hope there will be an injection of new blood to boost the event, which like all carnivals is facing a battle against apathy.

The carnival – which began 11 years ago to foster greater community spirit in Walton, the fiercely-independent northern part of Felixstowe – is always well supported on the day and everyone believes people want it to continue.

Its next event is the annual Spooky Doo Hallowe'en evening with children's fancy dress on October 26 at Felixstowe Trades and Labour Club.

Anyone who would like to help with the carnival should contact Mr Spraggons on 01394 284847.
