THE manager of a Suffolk shopping complex spoke of his outrage today after heartless thieves stole a Union Flag that was being flown at half mast out of respect for the victims of the terrorist attacks in America.

Stonham Barns Retail and Leisure Complex manager, John Philpott, described how one of his employees discovered the callous theft when they arrived for work yesterday morning.

The flag, which is the trademark of the Stonham Aspal based complex, had been cut from the pole sometimes between 5.30pm on Thursday and 8.30am yesterday.

"Out of respect to our American friends and visitors, we lowered our Union Flags to half mast, only to find one had been stolen," he said.

"How any one can be so unfeeling and disrespectful at this time is beyond us and out tenants.

"Have you no shame, when thousands of innocent people have lost their lives and you snub our efforts to show compassion."

There were three flags outside the complex, which contains among others shops, a caravan park, golf course and driving range and a birds of prey centre.
