SOUTHWOLD is a picture of seaside tranquillity and sophistication - but in contrast to its genteel image, residents have claimed that 'boy racers' are causing chaos in the historic and picturesque town.

Rallying calls have been made in a bid to put an end to problems caused by youngsters in Pier Avenue and the Pier car park at night.

A petition has been given to Suffolk police, while town councillors have been holding stake-outs to catch the culprits, who have been causing a nuisance in the town for the last year.

Simon Tobin, Southwold town councillor, said he feared that someone may be killed.

He said: “It's extremely dangerous and residents are desperately concerned. They come down Pier Avenue then turn left into the car park and speed up.”

Complaints have also been made about the amount of noise the youngsters make.

Suffolk police have tried to clampdown on the problem and David Gallagher, Waveney's portfolio manager for operations and facilities, is also looking into the situation.

Anne-Marie Breach, police press officer, said: “We've previously had issues there and have been out there regularly.

“Residents should make us aware of any issues, give us a call and we will ensure they are given our attention.”
