A BOY is seriously injured in hospital after being involved in a collision with a van in Leiston.

The cyclist, who is believed to be a ten-year-old pupil at Leiston Middle School, was hit by a Ford Transit van in Cross Street shortly before 9am today.

A police spokeswoman said the youngster was taken to Ipswich hospital with "crush injuries."

She said initial reports were that the boy sustained leg injuries but the injuries are believed to be "serious."

Officers were at the scene quickly after attending an earlier incident at nearby Old Foundry Place where an elderly woman had been hurt during a fall. Her injuries were not believed to be serious.

Cross Street was closed in both directions after the accident and was expected to remain closed until noon.
