BOOKWORM Avalon Kitterman has braved the famous black chair for the second time to come out tops in a Mastermind championship final.

After winning the internal competition at her own school, Orwell High, Felixstowe, she has now won the South Suffolk final.

Now she goes on to meet the winners from eight other schools in the county final, to be held in Bury St Edmunds on March 8.

At the South Suffolk Final, held at Ipswich Library, Year Nine pupil Avalon, was up against winners from five other schools.

She chose The Magician's Nephew by C S Lewis as her specialist subject, and swiftly answered all but one of her questions correctly in the two minutes allowed.

She then went on to do very well in her general knowledge and picture round.

The contestant from Claydon High School, Verity Moore, came second. She also goes through to the county final. It is the first year that Claydon has entered the competition.

Playing the role of Magnus Magnusson and asking the questions was Jean Martin, advisory librarian for the Schools Library Service.

She told the audience that there had been 30 entries from schools in Suffolk this year, the highest ever in the 12 year history of the competition.

Avalon, who studied Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, both by JK Rowling, and The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe by C S Lewis, for earlier rounds, now has to choose another book.

This time it must be a work of no more than 175 pages long, no series books, and no Harry Potter.
