TEENAGER Vicky Kelcher is desperate to walk again and has her sights set on being bridesmaid at her cousin's wedding.

The 16-year-old has been in hospital for more than six weeks since suffering horrific injuries when a car crusher her against a wall and still has a long road to recovery ahead of her.

"Knowing that she is to be bridesmaid in October has given her a real goal to work towards.

"She is desperate to start walking again and is looking forward to going shopping in London for her dress," said her mother, Wendy.

For the moment, 16-year-old Vicky is recovering after her pelvis was crushed and her leg broken in a road accident in December.

Vicky, of Chaucer Road, Felixstowe had been walking with her boyfriend, Ty Freer, in Garrison Lane, when a black Mercedes driven by businessman Peter Whalley left the road, narrowly missing Ty and crushing Vicky against a brick wall.

Doctors had hoped to discharge Vicky from hospital sooner but that plan had to be changed following a brief day visit home.

"Vicky did come home for a day but she had to go back to hospital the following day.

"The doctors had hoped to let her stay with us but she was in too much discomfort and needed more nursing," said Mrs Kelcher.

Vicky is now not expected to leave hospital for at least another two weeks and her mother said it was unlikely that she would be able to walk before March.

"She is still in a lot of discomfort and finds it incredibly painful to bend her knee.

"It is not sensible for her to come home until the frame which is holding her pelvis together is removed.

"Vicky has been very frustrated at having to wait but realises that it is no good removing the plate early otherwise it will undo all the good work."

She underwent several operations at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and was then moved to Ipswich hospital.

"I am extremely proud of her. She is so young and has coped so well with everything.

" It hasn't been easy for her yet she is still determined to succeed and we know she is will," said Mrs Kelcher.

The teenager is continuing with her childcare studies which she started in September and hopes to return to Suffolk College sometime in May. In the meantime the college has arranged for work to be sent home.

Felixstowe businessman, Peter Whalley, 35, of Princes Gardens, will appear before South East Suffolk magistrates in Ipswich on 26 February. He has been charged with dangerous driving, drink driving and careless driving.
