POLICE investigating a daylight armed robbery at an Ipswich jewellers have today made breakthrough after what could be vital evidence was found.

Motorcycle clothing, believed to belong to one of the robbers involved in the raid at Robert Gatward jewellers at the weekend, was discovered by a member of the public and is currently being forensically examined.

Two men, wearing motorcycle gear and helmets, and armed with a hammer, entered the jewellers in the Buttermarket at about 3.25pm on Saturday.

They smashed a display case and stole a number of high value watches, as well as a ring and two bracelets and were last seen riding off towards Tower Ramparts after boarding a dark coloured moped in Tower Street.

On Sunday night a member of the public called police to report that a motorcyclist's helmet, gloves, a jacket and a hammer had been discarded by some bins in Stevenson Road, Ipswich.

When police arrived the following day, the hammer was gone but they recovered the other items.

Detective sergeant Bernie Morgan, of Ipswich Police, said: “Finding the clothing is an important breakthrough. They will now be subject to forensic analysis but obviously that is a time restrictive thing so we want to make further appeals for witnesses.

“We know there were witnesses who saw the clothing initially. It may be that a member of the public saw the hammer and thought they would take it for themselves. If that has happened, that member of the public should ring me as a matter of urgency.

“We are also appealing to anyone who was in the area of Tower Ramparts and saw the males. We want to know where they went after that.

“Also if anyone was in town in the area of the shops at the time of robbery, they should get in touch.”

A team of dedicated officers are currently still recovering CCTV footage of the incident.

Both robbers are described as black and 6ft tall. One was wearing a black jacket, black baggy trousers and a black motorcycle helmet.

The other was wearing a blue jacket, light blue trousers and a yellow striped motorcycle helmet.

Anyone who saw the robbery or has information about the men involved should contact Det Sgt Bernie Morgan at Ipswich CID on 01473 613500 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
