The 41-year-old British Telecom engineer, of Broom Hill, Ipswich, was found "bobbing" in the river Orwell after plunging from the bridge at around 7.40am on August 30.
The inquest into his death, held at County Hall, Ipswich, today also heard that Mr Roberts had made three attempts to save himself after falling into the water by climbing on to a concrete foundation of the bridge.
His girlfriend Dawn Weston-Gare said that on the morning he appeared "quite normal" and "happier" than he had been the previous evening.
