Broadband breakthrough for ntl

COMMUNICATIONS giant ntl is set to shake up the ISDN and unmetered dial-up internet markets with the launch of a new always-on, high-speed broadband service for home customers.

The UK's first 128kbps service provides always on internet access at twice the speed of dial-up and priced to match existing 56kbps 'on-off-on-off' services and it is now available to 4.7 million homes across the country.

It is available to customers via a cable modem that provides always on, high-speed access for £14.99 a month. This price matches what leading internet service providers charge for a dial-up, 56kbps service and it is also well below current ISDN charges.

As the new 128kbps broadband service is always on, it spells the end to frustrating task of having to switch on-off-on-off to surf the net and to send e-mails.

It is also twice the speed as normal dial up access and as it doesn't tie up the phone line with customers able to surf the net and talk on the phone at the same time.

David Thatcher, managing director of ntl in the east and south east said: "We have always been an internet innovator and champion of broadband. We were the first to launch free and unmetered internet with ntlworld, and today, by launching this service at this price, we're shaking up the internet market again to help build critical mass of broadband homes."

Douglas Alexander, MP, minister of state at the Department of Trade and Industry with responsibility for e-commerce, added: "The UK Government welcomes the announcement of this competitively priced new service.

"We are committed to ensuring that more UK consumers should have the opportunity to benefit from fast, always-on, internet access and this is another step towards that goal".
