Part of the Orwell Bridge was shut for more than five hours today after a vehicle broke down, causing traffic chaos across Ipswich and east Suffolk.

Police closed one lane of the westbound carriageway of the A14 on the bridge after a potato harvester came to a halt shortly before 6.40am.

The lane reopened at 11.45am.

Drivers have reported long delays the area as a result of this incident.

Problems were compounded by further crashes, as well as the malfunction of a number of traffic lights in Ipswich as a result of the storm overnight.

Four vehicles - a Vauxhall Vivaro van, Volkswagen Polo, Renault Kangoo and Vauxhall Astra - were involved in a collision under the Orwell Bridge at The Strand, Wherstead, at 8.25am.

No one was injured during the incident, a police spokesman said.

Around the same time, a lorry and a car crashed at the Seven Hills roundabout at Nacton, but no one was said to be hurt.
