A BROTHER-in-law of a traffic policeman was caught speeding at 110mph on his motorbike on the A14.

Alexander Payne, 32, a driver at the Port of Felixstowe has been banned from driving for 28 days and ordered to pay £455.

His law-enforcing relative said in a character witness statement that Payne had taken a long hard look at himself and realised the dangers of driving so fast.

Payne, of Great Harlings, Shotley Gate, was caught speeding by a policeman at 2.50pm on Aug 13. He had been speeding on his Yamaha motorbike while travelling east bound on the A14 near Trimley.

The father-of-two who had a clean licence pleaded guilty to exceeding the speed limit on a dual carriageway.

Payne's mitigation asked the magistrates to take in to account the fact that a driving licence was vital for Payne to work as a driver at the Languard terminal of the Suffolk port.

The court was also told that Payne is now planning to sell the motorbike and replace it with a car.

Two character witness statements were read out to the court, one from Payne's brother-in-law Pc Jason Boots, from the Stanway Road Policing Unit in Essex. In the statement Pc Boots, who works for Essex Police, which is currently running a responsible rider campaign to make motorcyclists more aware of the road, said Payne was a good husband and father. He added that Payne had learnt his lesson and realised that driving at such an excessive speed could have caused an accident.

Magistrate, Maureen Bateman, said they had taken in to account his guilty plea, but ordered him to pay a £400 fine. They told him that his licence will be endorsed and that he will be disqualified for 28 days. He was also ordered to pay £55 court costs.

Payne refused to comment outside the court.
