BUDDING maestros hit the right note at an Ipswich school's young musician of the year competition.

More than 100 musicians – from 11 to 14 years old – played their way through preliminary heats at the Northgate Arts Centre.

From the categories of woodwind, strings, piano and voice, talented Erdem Misirlioglu scooped top honours for his dazzling skills on the piano.

Category winners were Hannah Blyth in woodwind, strings winner was Maddy Hindle, Lucy Allen won the piano prize and Becca Gray was considered the sweetest voice.

Head Neil Watts, who presented the winners with certificates and prizes, praised them all, saying that the standard was very high and "nerves were kept under control".
