BRITANNIA Building Society is to merge with the Co-op bank to create a “super-mutual” financial giant, it was announced today.

Britannia was formed in the 1970s with a merger between a number of societies across the country, including the Ipswich-based Eastern Counties Building Society and it retains a large office in the town.

The move is seen as strengthening the mutual, non-shareholder, financial sector at a time of crisis.
