POLICE have arrested a man in Bury St Edmunds today after the body of a woman was found in a quiet cul-de-sac.

The 42-year-old man was arrested in the town centre after the discovery of the woman's body in a pink semi-detached house in the corner of Bedell Close following a call to police at 11pm yesterday. The incident is being treated as murder.

Residents were today waking up to the sight of police activity as scenes of crime officers worked at the taped-off address. Some residents remained unaware of the grim discovery that had been made on their doorstep.

Neighbours said the house was home to a young couple and their three children who had lived there for a couple of years.

One woman said: "I am shocked. I saw them coming and going all over Christmas and they always had parents and relatives visiting.

"I am just concerned for them because they are our neighbours. I hope they sort it out quickly and find out what happened."

Another resident found out about the death when she popped to her local shop first thing in the morning. She said: "It makes you tremble. You don't think of it happening in your own street."

Residents also spoke of the close as being a perfect place to live.

Donna Holt, who has lived in the close for 11 years, said: "It's a very, very quiet road and it is a place where a lot of people want to live.

"It's a nice part of Bury. People keep their houses nice and crime wise, apart from kids playing in the road and making noise, there's nothing."

The Bury St Edmunds murder investigation is the second to be launched by Suffolk police in a few weeks and follows the brutal stabbing of Capel St Mary pensioner Joan Albert before Christmas.
