IPSWICH Buses could move into a new depot and offices within the next few years.

The company is set to move away from its current depot in Constantine Road to allow that to be redeveloped as part of the Ipswich Village project.

And the household waste site on the opposite side of Sir Alf Ramsey will move with it.

No firm site for the move has yet been decided – although the former Harris Bacon Factory site off Hadleigh Road is one possible location.

The bus company's premises are owned by Ipswich council. They were signed over to the borough as part of the deal which saw the bus company's pension debts taken over by the council.

The offices are in part of what was originally the Ipswich Corporation electricity department – the historic buildings are at the heart of the Ipswich Village project and are expected to be eventually converted into homes.

New houses would also be built on land currently used as the bus garage and also the existing household waste site and concrete depot.

Ipswich council's head of economic development Paul Chippendale said the move was not imminent.

"But we are looking towards the first years of the new local plan, probably the middle of the current decade, for the move to happen," he said.

Mr Chippendale said the Harris site had been closely investigated, and it was still a strong possibility that the bus depot could move there – but he was aware there may be other interested parties.

However it is zoned for employment use, and it is sandwiched between two busy rail lines – with the possibility of a third being built to take trains directly from the Felixstowe line to the Norwich line.
