LABOUR councillors have spoken of their shock today at plan to axe bus services in Ipswich.

The party claims they have discovered that Conservative and Liberal councillors are planning to siphon off hundreds of thousands of pounds from Ipswich Buses, forcing the bus company to make major cuts to bus services affecting almost every area of the town.

Labour Leader David Ellesmere said: “Ipswich Borough Council is the sole shareholder in the bus company and the controlling Conservative and Liberal Democrat councillors are planning to place new financial burdens on the bus company.

“Tory and Lib councillors are insisting that the bus company increases profits, rather than invest money in providing a quality service to the people of Ipswich.

“The upshot is that three service routes will be axed and many others will be run at reduced frequency, particularly in the evenings and on Sundays. Investment in new buses will be frozen, staff will be sacked and some cheap ticket options will be withdrawn.

“The Labour Party is totally opposed to these cuts. They will force people off public transport and into cars. Congestion will increase in Ipswich and the environment will suffer.
