First Wheels on the Waterfront set to attract the crowds

There are few better places to be, at a weekend, than Ipswich Waterfront.

Whether it is simply promenading, meeting friends or relaxing in the bars, cafes and restaurants there is so much to do and to see.

This Sunday, July 19, is the first Wheels On The Waterfront event which seems sure to attract large crowds to the area.

The rally, which looks likely to become an annual event in the town’s summer entertainment calendar, will feature new and classic cars, motorbikes, fire engines and trucks.

The free event is about wheels across the ages and will also include buses and radio-controlled cars from the present day as well as from the Ipswich Transport Museum collections.

Waterfront businessman Kie Humphreys is really looking forward to this first event.

“It is going to be great seeing classic cars all along the Waterfront, I love cars.

“I have been talking to other people down here and they are all keen on it.

“It is such a really good place to have it and I am sure it will attract crowds.”

Cafe owner Kie will be working but is also taking part in the event.

He will be displaying his own classic car - an impressive Mark 1 Lotus Elise from 1999 which is coming out of the garage.

He added: “People love to see classic and vintage cars and the Waterfront is a superb setting for them. It would be great if this could become and annual event.”

Wheels is from 10am to 6pm on Sunday July 19 though the area is sure to be buzzing beyond that.

The event itself includes features for all the family.

Features include Women on Wheels in support of the This Girl Can campaign and safety advice for young cyclists. Cycling is a growing pastime in Ipswich.

A spokesman for Ipswich Borough Council said the event was not just for petrol-heads but for those interested in finding out more about the history of transport or wanting to take up a new sport.

There is plenty more happening at the Waterfront during the summer.

The Ipswich Maritime Festival weekend this year is August 15 and 16.

And Isaacs at the Quay is planning a family fun day on Tuesday August 25 with Kimmys Zoo.

Wheels is supported by Donalds Volvo & Mazda, John Banks Honda, the British Radio Car Association, Lancaster Toyota, Lings Triumph Motorbikes, Elmy Cycles, Gallagher Car & Van Rental, Ipswich Buses, First Bus, Ipswich Transport Museum and Orwell Motorcycles.

“
