OFFICIALS who are evicting a business from its premises in Martlesham because it is too noisy for residents are recommending that it should be allowed to set up shop near homes in Trimley.

Parish councillors are furious at the proposals for premises in the heart of Trimley, and say the situation will be just as intolerable for people there and want officers to change their minds.

Councillors will hear the objections tomorrow when they decide the future of the old station yard in Station Road.

At present the site has consent to be used as a builders' yard and tool hire depot, but an application has been received from Mr A H Fincham to change it to light engineering and for the storage of up to 15 touring caravans.

Mr Fincham runs a metal working business from premises in School Lane, Martlesham, but has been refused permission to stay there. An enforcement notice has been served, requiring him to quit the premises by May 16.

Trevor Jones, who lives next to the old station yard, fears the noise from grinders and hammers in the metal shop will ruin the peace and quiet enjoyed by householders in the area.

He was also concerned at a number of inaccuracies in the report to go before Suffolk Coastal's development control sub committee – including a statement that the yard has been unused for two years. The council's own enforcement officers were investigating it just a year ago.

Trimley district councillor Mary Dixon said she had "grave concerns" about the officers' recommendation and would be speaking at the meeting.
