A GARDEN centre owner was relieved - but far from happy - today after the long-awaited opening of a stretch of the A14 improvement works near Stowmarket.

The £32m scheme to improve a dangerous part of the trunk road nearing completion.

It took a major step forward yesterday when access from the west side of the town to the new A14 junction (49) was reopened.

Previously, this exit road has been turned into a cul-de-sac, with businesses by the side of the road left without passing trade.

Although motorists were able to gain access to those premises, traders say this was not clearly signed.

Those coming out of Stowmarket would have to divert near Woolpit to get there.

One of those affected, David Narey, owner of the family-run Narey's garden centre, today welcomed the opening of the road, but was still annoyed by the disruption.

He said: “I am glad to see the back of it, but it has taken a long time to do it. It has been a nightmare.

“We should be in a better position. There have been so many people avoiding the area.

“I am not sure that many people know it is open.”

Mr Narey has approached his MP, David Ruffley, for help over claiming compensation the losses in trade.

He added: “It is disheartening. There is very difficult trading at the moment.

“We are looking forward to seeing our regular customers again. Things can only get better.”

All side roads affected by the works will be reopened and all temporary diversions will be removed.

Some minor works will be completed in the New Year.
