The beauty business is changing rapidly - and becoming increasingly successful.

Hayley Capey, who has been in the business for around 20 years, is celebrating a major step forward for her Fore Street salon.

After a major investment she is re-launching what was previously Carolyn Hammond Beauty Salon as Lift Beauty Clinic.

Carolyn Hammond Beauty Salon was established in 1987.

Hayley, who now owns the business with husband Tim (he is very much in tbe background), said: “The beauty business is growing and expanding.

“People are taking more care of themselves, in terms of health and beauty.

“When I started out it was very much the `ladies that lunch’ who were the clientele. Now it is all age groups and it is not a luxury, You get girls of 16, 17 and 18 and they want their nails and their eyebrows done and tanning. They take so much more care of themselves.

“And it is not just women. Men have more interest in good grooming.

“They might have facials and massages, perhaps back massage after sport. it has become much more acceptable for men to want to look good.”

Hayley manages the salon and also does electrolysis (hair removal), facials and some cosmetic proceedures as well.

She said: “I started out about 20 years ago, and I have worked with Carolyn Hammond over that time.”

The mum, of two daughers - Kitty and Hepsie - has had a variety of posts over the years.

“I worked with Carolyn for six years. Then I had the help of the Prince’s Trust to start out on my own.

“I also worked at Shrubland Hall for a time and also worked on cruise ships.

“I travelled to the Caribbean, Alaska and quite a few countries.

“I also taught at Colchester Institute for six years.

“I kept coming back here.

“I love the old building and the feeling and atmosphere. It is grade II listed, and there are no straight walls.

“When this came up for sale, five years ago, I had to have it.

“I took it on five years ago and it has grown and developed, with new treatments and therapies.”

The clinic has grown from a single treatment room to three treatment rooms and the whole building, and a team of six therapists and a receptionist.

Hayley added: “We have an wide range of treatments, nails, facials, massages, semi-permanent make-up, things like botox and collagen.

“We also have a female doctor who comes in to the salon regularly to do botox and other aesthetic proceedures.

“We also do HD brows (eyebrow shaping).”

And where did the new name come from.

“We were thinking of a name, and my husband asked me, what do you want your customers to fee?”

“I said, cocooned and uplifted - so we came up with the name Lift Clinic.”

“This is a really exciting time,” she said, “We are looking forward to the future and watching the beauty industry grow, and growing with it.

“Our clients have been a great support to us.

“This is exciting. I keep pinching myself to believe it is happening.”

When she is not working herself, but wants a treat, she chooses a facial.

“We do 30 different facials here. My favourite is Decloir Aroma Facials.”
