National: Mother’s Day helps with sales

Good Spring for John Lewis

Department store chain John Lewis reported a 5.9% hike in sales to £81.3 million in the week to March 29 thanks to Mother’s Day trade and the warm spring weather, which saw demand for outdoor living products soar by 117%. The group’s sister business Waitrose saw sales drop 7.9% excluding petrol, but said this was “entirely in line with expectations” due to tough comparisons with the pre-Easter trading week a year earlier.
