A proposal to build a new four-storey office block in Ipswich will go before a committee today - a sign of further investment and regeneration in the Princes Street business district.

The Coalyard would see more high quality accommodation created on the car park of the recently refurbished Maltings office development.

Pertwee Estates submitted plans for the Chancery Road office space in December and intend on creating a glass-fronted block of four storeys with 2,341 square metres of office accommodation.

Peter Gardiner, councillor for the Gipping ward and chairman of the planning and development committee, has welcomed the plans, which he described as being “well thought out”.

He added: “We have been very fortunate having the Maltings redone and that whole corridor now from the station to the town centre has been redeveloped and benefited from investment.

“This will hopefully make another good investment and the committee are planning to recommend it for approval.

“The town needs to have the right accommodation so when things do pick up we are in the right place for people to see Ipswich as an attractive town to come and work in.”

More: Plans submitted for Chancery Road office space in December The building would sit partly above the existing car park for The Maltings, with a lower floor to accommodate 41 car parking spaces.

Plans outline an upper-ground floor reception, and office space on all four floors with the addition of two roof terraces on the second and third floors.

The developers, who worked with the borough when drawing up the plan, say this office block represents the next step in the council’s ambitions for a neighbourhood of homes and offices in the Ipswich Village.

The contemporary appearance of the block is designed to purposely contrast with The Maltings and the ground floor parking area would also provide electric vehicle charging points.

The site sits close to the new walking and cycling routes being created.

The borough’s planning and development committee will decide whether or not to grant planning permission for the proposed project today.
