The Masonic Hall in Soane Street, Ipswich, is set to get a new museum dedicated to the history of the town.

The Grade II-Listed building built in 1977 has applied for planning permission for an extension and remodelling for a new bar and toilets on the ground floor, and a museum and archive space open to the public on the first floor.

The application said: “As part of their charitable status, the Masonic Hall is to provide a public facility which is open to the community to use.

“The provision of a museum to make public their extensive archive of the history of Ipswich satisfies their obligations as a charity.

“The provision of this public facility in conjunction with the new bar and facilities will help to generate revenue for the Masonic Hall which will be used to preserve and maintain the listed building.”

The granting of permission is due to be decided later this month.
