An historic pub in the heart of Ipswich has been put up for sale by owner JD Wetherspoon.

The Golden Lion in the Cornhill will continue to trade as a Wetherspoon venue until it is sold.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We can confirm that The Golden Lion, a Wetherspoon pub in Ipswich, is on the market.

“We appreciate that the pub’s loyal customers will be disappointed with the decision, however, Wetherspoon has made a commercial decision to put the pub up for sale.

“If the pub is sold, then staff will be offered other jobs within Wetherspoon or might wish to stay with the new owners.”

The Grade II listed hotel building and old posting house is thought to date back to the 18th century and was formerly called The White Lion.

Ipswich Star readers have been sharing their thoughts on the news.

Cherese Bradnum wrote on the Star Facebook page: “Why it’s always busy in there?”

Helen Taylor added: “Personally, I like going in there on curry night for a cheap and cheerful dinner with my hubby. And I’m not ashamed to admit it! Plus the staff are fantastic, always helpful and nice. It will be a shame if they do manage to sell it.”

Vicky Warren, who used to work at The Golden Lion, said: “It was always a good atmosphere, especially on Saturday nights. It is a great building with lots of character and it will be sad to see it go.”
