FIREFIGHTERS were today called to a car fire on the junction of the B1078 in Manor Road, Clopton.

A crew from Woodbridge spent 20 minutes putting the fire out just after 6am.

Shoppers at an Ipswich furniture store were greeted by clouds of smoke after suspected vandals set light to a skip.

Two fire crews from Princes Street put out the flames in the skip at the back of AFH on London Road - which had been stoked with rubber tyres.

Store manager Bryan Cook said that a customer alerted staff to the fire after seeing smoke rise up from behind the building yesterday just before 2.30pm. They finally put out the blaze more than an hour and a half later.

"It was probably vandals," he said. "They'd topped up the skip with tyres for good measure."

The incident was one of a string of call-outs on a busy weekend for Suffolk's fire crews.

Two crews from the Lowestoft area were called to fight a blaze that started in a bedroom at an address in Lawn Park Road yesterday shortly after 4.20pm.

No one was believed to have been in the room at the time, which was left heavily smoke-logged.

A crew from Aldeburgh spent half an hour dousing a chimney fire in the town's High Street just after 5pm yesterday.

Firefighters from Woodbridge put out a blazing pile of logs on a playing field on Wickham Market's Main Street at 5.30pm

A chimney fire also broke out yesterday at Brown's Farm on The Street, Holbrook. One crew based in the village had extinguished the flames by 6.20pm.

In the early hours of yesterday morning, firefighters from Princes Street, Ipswich, extinguished a car fire – which spread to some nearby bushes – at the back of Thurleston School, Whitton Church Lane, shortly after midnight.
