RESIDENTS in Nacton Road today appealed for double yellow lines to be painted on a narrow slip road before there is an accident there.

An increased number of patients using The Orwell Dentist Surgery has led to motorists parking on two grass verges that separate the different sections of Nacton Road.

Residents wanted this to stop so Ipswich Council recently placed bollards on the verges but this has led to cars now parking in the narrow slip road that also goes between the two roads.

Dan Turner, 38, of Nacton Road, visited 20 houses with a petition and managed to collect 17 signatures.

The petition said: "Delivery vans and lorries either find it very difficult or impossible to use the slip road when a vehicle has parked on it. Also two cars exiting and entering at the same time becomes dangerous.

"The bollards that have been erected on the stretch of road have not resulted in any noticeable improvement to this situation. Vehicles still park on the road. They used to park with their wheels on the verge, but now they park the whole vehicle on the road so they can open the passenger door without hitting a bollard."

Mr Turner, who also believes the existing bollards look "ugly", added: "I have been here six years and when we moved here it was an irregular problem, but the dentist has got a lot more business now.

"I cannot blame the dentists for being successful. It is a case of people being more considerate of the way that they are using the roads.

"It is dangerous and an inconvenience to local residents. I have nearly been in two accidents."

Representatives from the council are due to visit the area tomorrow

to discuss the problem with residents.

Stephen Auld, service manager transportation for Ipswich Borough Council said he had not received the petition yet but added: "We will investigate and see what can be done to help solve the matter."
