A 23-year-old man has made his first appearance in court after being charged in connection with the murder of Ipswich teenager Tavis Spencer-Aitkens.

Callum Plaats spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and nationality at Suffolk Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning.

Plaats, of Findell Drive, Bramford, appeared before magistrates in custody, via video link from Martlesham Heath police investigation centre.

He entered no plea and was remanded in custody to appear at Ipswich Crown Court for a further hearing at 2pm of Tuesday afternoon.

During a brief hearing, prosecutor Lesla Small asked magistrates to send the matter straight to the higher court.

Helen Korfanty, representing Plaats, made no observations.

Tavis Spencer-Aitkens, 17, died from a single stab wound after being attacked by a group of men in Packard Avenue on June 2.
