UNIVERSITY student Matthew Kendray was ordered to serve 100 hours' community service after admitting he bought cannabis for his friends in Ipswich.

Kendray, 19, of Norwich Road, Ipswich pleaded guilty to possessing a Class B drug with intent to supply.

Kate Stephenson, prosecuting, said that although Kendray purchased the drugs on behalf of a friend, this was technically a case of possessing with intent to supply.

The court heard that on Friday September 13, Kendray was seen by police in a car at the junction of Britannia Road and Copleston Road in Ipswich.

Miss Stephenson told South East Suffolk Magistrates Court that two men were seen by police in the white Ford car.

After a search of the vehicle a quantity of herbal cannabis was found in the rear of the car.

The two men were arrested and Kendray admitted the drugs were his, telling officers that he had bought 13 £10 bags from the man for the discounted price of £100 on behalf of his friends.

He did this to "maximise purchasing power" according to Miss Stephenson.

Graham Skippen, for Kendray, said his client was a second year student at Colchester University and the group he had purchased the drugs for were only going to use them in private.

"They weren't going to cause bother to anyone," said Mr Skippen.

Magistrates said it was a serious offence but took into account the fact it was Kendray's first offence and the fact he had pleaded guilty at the first available opportunity.
