POLICE today arrested Anne Darwin, the wife of back-from-the-dead canoeist John Darwin, after she arrived back in Britain.
Cleveland Police said she was held at Manchester Airport after flying in from Atlanta and that she would be escorted back to the north east.
Armed police reportedly boarded her flight after it landed.
It is also reported she had flown in after agreeing to return to Britain to face questioning about the case.
Cleveland Police last night charged Mr Darwin with making an untrue statement to procure a passport and obtaining a money transfer by deception in relation to a life insurance policy.
Mr Darwin disappeared from his home in Seaton Carew, near Hartlepool, in March 2002 and was presumed drowned after his wrecked canoe was found.
But last Saturday he walked into a London police station, saying he had amnesia.
