Felixstowe man David Cole is celebrating after his impressively large pumpkin was named Best in Show at the Capel St Mary Allotment Association’s 37th annual flower and produce show.

The impressive squash weighed in at 117kg, beating Mr Cole’s own record of around 87kg set in 2008.

The prize-winning fruit was one of 627 entries from 70 exhibitors across 125 different classes displayed last weekend at the local village hall including handicraft, floral, photography and cookery.

Show secretary Charles Heath said: “The Capel show is one of the most popular events in the region and we were delighted to have attracted so many entries from across the county.

“Getting David’s pumpkin into the village hall required the efforts of four strapping men and we had to wait until all the other entries had been displayed before we could attempt to bring the pumpkin in – it was certainly the star attraction of our show.”

The seeds for Mr Cole’s pumpkin were imported specially from America. The winning entry was germinated in April and nurtured by Mr Cole’s special combination of liquid feed over the summer.
