An elderly couple’s car managed to get stuck up an embankment after it crashed into a sign on the A14 westbound slip road for the Copdock Interchange this evening.

Emergency crews were called to the scene shortly before 9pm today.

Police and firefighters safely removed the car, which hit a sign and a barrier before managing to roll over it onto the embankment.

There were originally fears the car might fall into the carriageway but police said in an update at 9.50pm that they are confident this is no longer the case.

One lane of the slip road was closed for recovery and investigation work but it has since re-opened.

Highways England officers have recovered the damaged signs.

The couple are not seriously hurt but are very shaken up.

They were taken to hospital as a precaution.

A police spokeswoman said: “It’s thought that the car hit the sign behind a barrier, it is on the wrong side of that barrier and has managed to get stuck on the embankment.”

In an update, she added: “We are now confident that the car is not going to go anywhere and so we are waiting for recovery.

“Both the passenger and the driver are out of the car.”

Firefighters from Ipswich East and Princes Street stations were also called to the scene.

The man suffered a small cut to his head which is unlikely to require treatment from paramedics, the police spokeswoman said.

The elderly woman was suffering from lower back pain but this is not thought to be serious or life-threatening.
