A CAR driven by an elderly woman careered into the front of an Ipswich fruit and veg shop today.

Witnesses told police they heard a car revving before hearing the vehicle crash into the shop in Selkirk Road, Ipswich.

Police were called just after 9.25am after the woman, who is believed to be in her 80s, lost control of her red Volvo 440 car.

People from neighbouring shops went to the aid of the woman and she was taken inside a nearby hairdressers until police arrived.

An ambulance was called and the woman was treated at the scene for minor injuries. She was not taken to hospital

When police arrived they found that the front of the car was embedded into the front of the shop.

Ipswich Borough Council dispatched an officer to assess the extent of the damage to the building.

A recovery crew arrived just after 10.10am and began the process of removing the car from the shop.
