A PILFERING postal worker is due to be sentenced by a crown court judge after admitting being light fingered with letters.

Ashley Roberts, who was stationed at the Kesgrave delivery office between September 2002 and January 2003 admitted three charges of theft between December 16 and January 29 this year and one of delaying post.

Roberts, of Glanville Place, Kesgrave, was rumbled after a complaint from a customer about missing post, South East Suffolk Magistrates were told.

When questioned Roberts admitted taking post saying he was low on cash. "He said he was short of money, there was a baby on the way and he had a car to run," said Kevin McCarthy, prosecuting on behalf of the Royal Mail.

The court heard Roberts visited the Foxhall tip three times, dropping about 100 packages at the dump each time. He also admitted stealing mail consisting of £150 cash and gift vouchers between January 21 and January 27 this year.

Officers searched his house and found a carrier bag under his bed containing more than 65 greeting cards.

A further 40 items were found in his wardrobe, said prosecutor Mr McCarthy. Six large packets were found in his bedroom containing various DVDs, videos and a computer game.

High Rowland, who acted on behalf of Roberts asked magistrates to commit the case for sentence at the crown court.

Magistrates granted Roberts, who is of previous good character, was unconditional bail to be sentenced at the crown court on a date to be fixed.
