STAFF shortages mean a well-established Felixstowe home for the elderly has to close down.

The Golden Sunset Home for Older People in Sea Road is closing its doors on October 1.

The home is owned by a set of trustees called The Golden Sunset Homes Trust who said that the problems have been going on for some time.

Around 18 residents live at the home, although it is registered for 23, and it is understood that two of them are aged 100 years old.

None of the residents though will be left homeless as most of them have been found replacement accommodation.

The Golden Sunset Homes Trust is a charity that set up the home to provide care for elderly Christians.

David Stone, former general manager of the Golden Sunset Homes Trust said in a statement to the Evening Star: "The trustees regret to advise that because of severe staff shortages, which have been ongoing for nearly two years, they have very reluctantly decided to close the Golden Sunset Home.

"The expected closure date is October 1."

Mr Stone has been appointed to oversee the closure of the home.

Despite recent reports on dwindling places available for health care for the elderly a spokesman from Suffolk County Council said that there had been an increase of 112 new residential and nursing home places in the county.

He said that new homes had opened and existing homes had expanded their numbers, which had served as replacements for the homes which had closed.

"The trustees and social care services are working closely together to find new homes for residents.

"The Joint Inspection Unit is confident that the trustees who have provided a good service over many years will handle the closure in an effective and sensitive manner," he said.
