Carnival's Disney theme

DISNEY will be the theme for this year's Felixstowe carnival.

Mickey, Donald, Daffy and Pluto will no doubt be just some of the characters on display when the carnival procession takes place on Saturday August 10.

The brains behind the Disney theme came from seven-year-old, Bradley Calver, of Melford Way, Felixstowe. The competition was organised by the Felixstowe carnival association as a way of getting children involved in the event.

The competition was open to all children under the age of 12 who had to come up with an idea for a theme and then depict it in a picture.

Bradley, who attends Grange Primary School, wanted his favourite film, Toy Story, to be the theme but thought it was unlikely to be chosen, so decided on Disney as a compromise.

Bradley was over the moon when he heard his idea had been chosen as the carnivals theme.

He said: "I love cartoons and was really happy when I heard my design had won."

His winning entry will be used on the front page of the 2002 carnival programme.

The committee said they were delighted with the number of entries they received.

Richard Stewart, carnival secretary, said: "In total we had more than 150 responses to the competition.

"We chose Disney as the winning theme as we thought it allowed the widest possible scope and would encourage the most creativity.

"All children love Disney and it is something that the kids can really get their teeth into and have a lot of fun doing so."

Although the carnival is still six months away, preparations are already underway to ensure that this year's extravaganza is the best ever.

Last year's carnival was one of the longest and most colourful parades ever with 55 floats.

"All entries for this year's carnival procession will be asked to decorate their floats along the lines of the theme Disney, and due to the massive appeal of Disney, there is a vast array of choice for getting in character," said Mr Stewart.

This summer's spectacular takes place on the August 10 and 11
