A MAN who fled from a taxi because he couldn't pay the fare and then failed to turn up to court because he didn't have any money for transport has been fined.

A MAN who fled from a taxi because he couldn't pay the fare and then failed to turn up to court because he didn't have any money for transport has been fined.

Jonathan Cook, of Manning Road, Felixstowe, took a taxi from Ipswich to his home town on February 7. However, he was unable to pay the £19.20 fee and fled the scene.

He was due to appear at court on February 12 but failed to attend because he was again unable to pay for his journey.

At South East Suffolk Magistrates Court the 20-year-old pleaded guilty to making off without payment and admitted breaching his bail.

Magistrates were also asked to take another offence into consideration, this time skipping a taxi fare of £13.30.

Cook was ordered to pay compensation of £32.50 to the taxi firm. He was also fined £35 for making off without payment, £10 for failing to attend court and ordered to pay £35 towards prosecution costs.
