COUNCILLORS were today set to discuss funding a new cycle path between Needham Market and Stowmarket.

Running alongside the B1113, the scheme is sure to provide an enjoyable and "green" link between the two towns – but it is up to Mid Suffolk councillors to back it with £1,500 of funds.

It will form part of a new National Cycle Network, if members of the Mid Suffolk District Council's executive committee decide to back it with cash.

Environmental transport lobby group Sustrans has approached Mid Suffolk District Council to contribute towards the costs of the cycle path, which is expected to cost a total of £15,000.

Other money is expected to come in the form of a Landfill Tax grant but the application contains a condition of third party part-funding so Mid Suffolk's input is set to be vital.

David Benham, Mid Suffolk District Council's regeneration manager, said:

"Public transport is not as it should be in some areas because we are in a rural area but we want to ensure that people can cycle safely."
