Cat chase sparks firefighter rescue

LITTLE did Sheila Lawrence realise when she called the fire brigade to rescue her dog from under a shed that Bonnie was just doing what comes naturally … and chasing a cat.

Mrs Lawrence had opened her back door to go and hang some washing on the line when Bonnie shot out and disappeared under a garden shed.

Despite her best efforts to coax the one-year-old terrier Jack Russell cross out from beneath the shed, Bonnie did not move.

"I'd been trying to entice her out but she was stuck under there for about an hour yesterday," said Mrs Lawrence, of Poplar Hill, Combs Ford, near Stowmarket.

"Normally when you tempt her with food she will go anywhere but she wouldn't come out.

"I was panicking, all I could hear was her little bark under the shed."

In the end the worry got too much and at 10.18am she called the fire brigade. When they arrived they discovered Bonnie wasn't stuck but trying to reach a cat.

Firefighters dug away the earth and when Bonnie turned round to see what was going on the cat made it's escape leaving her no choice but to come out.

However Bonnie wasn't grateful to her rescuers.

"She didn't like the firemen at all," Mrs Lawrence said.

"It was me who had to drag her out and in the end they had to go because Bonnie kept going for them. They were ever so good though," Mrs Lawrence added praising the crew from Stowmarket.

"I felt bad calling them out."

Mrs Lawrence is not surprised by Bonnie's antics. She said the dog is very lively and mischievous.

She said: "Bonnie is full of it. She ran around the front room once at about 90 mph hit her head on the coffee table and knocked herself out.

"We were all panicking but she just got up, shook herself and started again.

"She has fallen all the way down the stairs too."
