CeX confirms it is victim of cyber attack – here’s what to do if you are a customer

Bosses at pre-owned games and DVD retailer CeX, which has stores in Ipswich, Colchester, Felixstowe, Lowestoft and Newmarket, have said customers may have been affected by a recent security hack into its systems.

An email from the company was sent out to its customers today, August 30, stating that an “unauthorised third party” had accessed its systems, and that they believed “some customer data has been compromised”.

The retailer confirmed it did not have any card data stored, and had not held customer card data since 2009.

The email sent to customers said: “We are taking this extremely seriously and want to provide you with details of the situation and how it might affect you.

“We also want to reassure you that we are investigating this as a priority and are taking a number of measures to prevent this from happening again.

The email continued: “As a result of a breach of security in which an unauthorised third party accessed our computer systems, we believe that some customer data has been compromised.

“This includes personal information, and, for a small number of customers, it also includes encrypted data from expired credit or debit cards.

“As a customer of CeX, there is a possibility this might affect you.”

The firm said additional measures had already been put in place, and were working with the authorities to track down those responsible.

However, CeX bosses urged customers to change the passwords on their online account, and change the password on other accounts which use the same password as a safety measure.
