VOLUNTARY organisations in Ipswich are today half-a-million pounds better off after a series of grants were rubberstamped by town chiefs.
Among the main beneficiaries for the coming financial year are the New Wolsey Theatre and Ipswich Citizens' Advice Bureau which will both get £92,000, and the Ipswich Caribbean Association which will get £55,000.
Meanwhile the Ipswich Council For Voluntary Service is in line for £35,000, while £19,000 will go to the Iceni Project, which supports vulnerable people in the town including sex workers and drug addicts.
The grants were confirmed at a meeting of the borough council's executive committee this week.
Liz Harsant, leader of Ipswich Borough Council, said: “A lot of organisations such as the Iceni Project, if they did not have some funding from local government, would presumably not be able to go on.
“All of these organisations provide a service for the people of Ipswich.
“This funding is one way in which we acknowledge the good work they do.”
Brian Tobin, manager of the Iceni Project, welcomed the cash injection.
“It is good that our colleagues at Ipswich Borough Council recognise our work and continue to fund us in this manner.
“It is vital funding.”
