CHRISTIANS from all over the Felixstowe area will be getting together for a special event on Sunday.

More than 500 are expected to attend the town's annual Unity Service, which will be held at St John's Church, Orwell Road, at 6.30pm.

Guest speaker for the evening will be Rev Paul Hills, superintendent minister for the Eastern Counties Baptist Union.

A choir will lead the singing accompanied by the Felixstowe Salvation Army Band, and many churches will make contributions towards the worship.

During the event, the townwide youth worker Ali Risdon, 25, will speak about her first year in the role.

Ali has been working in schools, on youth services in churches and different projects, to bring the church and gospel of Jesus closer to youngsters and strip away the old-fashioned view of religion and make it more culturally relevant.

Sunday's service is organised by Churches Together in Felixstowe and during the event a new congregation, the River Of Life Church, will sign the covenant to join the movement.

The service, which has the theme "The fountain of life", also begins a Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

There will be a number of opportunities during the week to pray and these will be at: Monday January 21, 12.30pm Cavendish Community Church, Grange Farm Avenue; 7pm Holy Communion, St John's, Orwell Road. Tuesday January 22, 10.30pm Maidstone Road Baptist Church; 4.30pm, vespers, The Convent, Orwell Road. Wednesday January 23, 9.30am, Holy Communion, Kirton Church; 2pm Women's Group and 3.10pm prayer for all, Salvation Army Citadel, Cobbold Road. Thursday, January 24, 9.30am Holy Communion, St Edmund's Church, Langer Road. Friday January 25, noon, Mass at St Felix Roman Catholic Church followed by Christian Aid lunch in church hall.
