THE films are still not rolling at Ipswich's largest cinema following a fire in a plant room.

It is expected that the UGC cinema in Grafton Way will stay closed until Monday because of the blaze early yesterday morning.

A spokeswoman for the cinema said that it would not reopen until they could be sure that the building was safe for staff and customers.

Instead of a list of times for the opening of new films such as Enigma and Mike Bassett: England Manager, there is a recorded message advising customers that the cinema will remained closed until Monday and anyone who has already paid for tickets can get a full refund.

The fire started at around 7.30am yesterday in a power back up room in a large battery pack.

Six crews from across the county were called out and were able to keep the fire contained to the plant room and the ventilation shaft.

Smoke could be seen pouring from vents in the building and crowds gathered as the fire fighters arrived on the scene.

Crews wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire, while thermal imaging and the turntable ladder were used to try and locate the blaze in the huge building.

No-one was inside the building at the time and no-one was injured.
