A charity is urging workers in Ipswich to know their rights when it comes to holiday entitlement, as it emerges some employers are wrongly depriving their staff of paid leave.

Citizens Advice Ipswich helped 558 clients with issues relating to their work between April 2016 and March this year, many of whom had a grievance concerning holiday and pay.

Research by the national charity recently found half of people on zero hours contracts, and two in five people on temporary contracts, wrongly believe they are not entitled to paid days off; while some bosses are withholding holiday from people who don’t meet their sales targets.

Nicky Willshere, manager of Citizens Advice Ipswich, said: “There is a lot of confusion and we have seen examples where employees have missed out through a lack of awareness of their rights.”

As a result, Mr Wilshere is calling for the next Government to help workers get what they are owed by “boosting enforcement and reducing the costs of employment tribunals”.

Specifically, she wants to see the creation of one “fair work authority” to tackle employers who break the rules; a £50 cap placed on employment tribunal fees; and self-employment to be defined in law to prevent staff being exploited.
