HE has already trekked across the Himalayas and now Ipswich man Steve Dyes is again setting his sights high as he looks ahead to scaling Mount Kilimanjaro.

The 28-year-old is taking on the gruelling journey next summer to raise money for Ipswich-based charity Disability Care Enterprise (DCE).

To secure his place on the trek he must raise at least £2,500 and his fundraising efforts for the trip are already in full swing.

And the latest charity event takes place on September 7 and 8.

Over that weekend Colin and Janet D'Eath will be inviting people to their Trimley St Mary home where Mr D'Eath has a model railway permanently laid out in his garden.

Friend Maurice Deeks will be bringing along part of his large collection of Hornby Dublo, manufactured by Meccano, while Jason Thorn will be showing off his collection of model fire engines and fire memorabilia.

And to complete the transport theme of the weekend, Ipswich Transport Museum have provided a Commer Fire Engine for the occasion.

It is hoped that the event will give another big boost to Mr Dyes' fundraising efforts and help him on his way to Africa.

It will be a challenging trip but one he knows will be an unforgettable experience.

"I did the charity trek to the Himalayas last year," said Mr Dyes of Gladstone Road. "I enjoyed that and made a lot of friends.

"It's a good opportunity to get out and see different places around the world."

He continued: "It's a ten day trek – five days up, with one and a half days along the way to acclimatise, and about three days coming down again."

All money raised by the trek will go to DCE which has been helping local disabled people for more than ten years. In that time, over £500,000 has been granted to individuals to improve the quality of their life.

n The charity weekend will be held in Trimley St Martin on September 7 and 8. People are advised to follow the signs to the event from Trimley St Mary Primary School or Trimley railway station. Admission is £1 for adults and 50p for children.
