A CONTINENTAL-style coffee shop in Hadleigh is believed to be the first place on the town's High Street to accept payment in euros.

Fiona Crabtree, who re-opened the 60-year-old Coffee Tavern last August, said even opening so late in the season she had noticed how many tourists had come in.

She said: "We decided to take euros because we thought it might encourage tourists to Hadleigh. It's a very attractive place and we did have a lot of tourists last year. A lot of them come to stay in Kersey and Lavenham and do the whole area."

European visitors are regulars in Hadleigh, many of them travelling to use the Suffolk cycle route, part of a national network opened last year.

Ms Crabtree said the coffee tavern would be displaying the daily euro-sterling exchange rate and would take Euros but would only be giving change in sterling.
